This winter, visit the other Caribbean

The Cuba Seminars provide a rare, full-access pass and in-depth intellectual immersion into this storied nation.

President Obama has called for a "new beginning" in U.S. relations with Cuba, but normal relations with this remarkable and resilient nation await a transition to democracy. Mass Humanities has been licensed by the U.S. government to travel to Cuba for the purpose of observing and encouraging this transition while also providing rich insights into what government and democracy means at a time when the United State is debating those terms.

Our itinerary often includes three culturally rich and fascinating cities: Havana, Trinidad, and Cienfuegos, with a brief stop in Santa Clara, where the last battle of the Revolution was fought. Each day there will be one or more meetings with arts groups, public educators, university students and faculty, foundation officials, religious leaders, and private entrepreneurs. Guests will experience guided tours at museums, take in cultural performances, visit artist studios, and immerse themselves in various aspects of street culture. For the curious and adventurous traveler, this is a unique opportunity to visit a country that has been inaccessible to most U.S. citizens for half a century.

Raul IzquierdoOur guide for past trips has been Raul Izquierdo, a true polymath and one of the most knowledgeable guides in all of Cuba. We have worked with Raul for many years and he has become a valued friend of Mass Humanities. We have also been accompanied in Cuba by Rafael HernandezRafael M. Hernández, one of Cuba's leading public intellectuals, the editor of Temas, a Cuban quarterly in the field of social sciences and the humanities, and the author of several books on the history and culture of Cuba including Looking at Cuba: Essays on Culture and Civil Society.
