Collecting Berkshire immigrant stories the first step toward a Public Humanities Center

This October, Mass Humanities joined Berkshire Community College for the launch of the pilot multimedia documentary project, "Berkshire Immigrant Stories." The project is expected to pave the way for the establishment of a Public Humanities Center at Berkshire Community College as part of our Community College Public Humanities Centers initiative.

Mass Humanities recognized by New Repertory Theatre

On opening night of each play, New Repertory Theater has a long tradition of honoring a community advocate and/or artist who has supported the production. Mass Humanities was recognized on the opening night of GOOD, New Rep’s latest, for our support of their Spotlight Symposium Series. New Rep’s 2016-17 season continues with upcoming performances of Fiddler on the Roof.

Housing for AllHousing for All?

Lively humanities-based discussion of Cambridge’s affordable housing

Mass Humanities sent Director of Grants & Programs Pleun Bouricius to attend the first of Cambridge Historical Society’s public forums on the past, present, and future of affordable housing in the city. The popular event drew nearly 100 attendees and put the humanities first in addressing a topic where economics often occludes other disciplines. The third and final event takes place November 17th.

Future of Local History in MAIntrepid History Makers Wanted

Planning the future of local history in our state

Mass Humanities is involved in convening the Massachusetts Alliance for Sharing History, an umbrella group for the state’s historical organizations. The next planning meeting will be held at the American Antiquarian Society un Worcester at 2PM on November 16th. Join moderator Bob Forrant and like-minded historians to determine what the future holds.

Apply for Discussion GrantBreaking Down Language Barriers

Dozens of families participated in the Mass Humanities-funded Family Literacy Day at the New Bedford Adult Learning Center. Each went home with a copy of Juan Herrera’s The Upside Down Boy, a fitting children’s book in English and Spanish for language learners young and old. Our discussion grants are available for similar programming in your community. The deadline for the next round of awards is November 15th.

Echoes of the First World WarEchoes of the First World War

The National Endowment for the Humanities has embarked upon a major two-year funding initiative marking the 100th anniversary of the U.S. entry into World War I. Stipends of $1200–$1800 are available to public humanities projects exploring the resonances of the war today.

Mass MomentsNo Votes for Women

A referendum to give Massachusetts women the vote failed at the polls on this day in 1915, owing in part to a cadre of women who were convinced that they could be better, more effective citizens without the ballot. The Antis, as they had come to be known, aided male allies in keeping Massachusetts women out of the voting booth for over 30 years. But despite this victory their day was past. On this same day in 1920, Massachusetts women cast their votes in the first Federal Election.
