On May 30, Governor Maura Healey announced her choice of Regie Gibson as the inaugural poet laureate of Massachusetts. Mass Humanities partnered with Mass Cultural Council and the Governor’s office to guide this first nomination process. Poets from every corner of the commonwealth sent poetry, artistic statements, and awe-inspiring resumes, showing yet again the vibrancy of writing and spoken word art forms in our state.

“Through engaging with poetry we get a clearer sense of our own thoughts, feelings, and inner music – but also, our inspirations, aspirations and desperations – not only OURS, but of many who have walked before us – and, many who will walk after,” said Gibson. “Poetry, for me, is a sustained dialogue with ourselves across time.”

We look forward to working with Regie Gibson in the coming months.
